On April 19, I had the honor of addressing matriculating students at Trinity University, Lagos, sharing insights from my journey in a speech titled “Empowered Living: Unlocking Your Potentials.” Reflecting on my 33-year career in banking and my personal growth, I emphasized three pillars essential for success: self-awareness, self-development, and resilience.
Empowered living is about understanding your unique strengths, continuously developing your skills, and learning to overcome challenges. This approach not only fuels professional success but also shapes a meaningful, impactful life.
Self-awareness is the foundation of personal growth. During my early days as a student, a mentor helped me realize that setbacks are not the end but a call to rise above. Recognizing both strengths and weaknesses allows you to stay grounded and purposeful.
Self-development requires intentionality. By setting SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—you actively engage in your growth. Success comes from investing in both technical skills and soft skills, such as communication and emotional intelligence. In a world of constant change, continuous learning is the only way to thrive.
Resilience—the ability to bounce back from setbacks—rounds out the formula for success. Through my experience in turning Wema Bank around, I’ve learned that resilience means adapting to challenges with optimism and persistence.
Ultimately, your academic journey at Trinity University is the beginning of a larger adventure. Embrace growth, seek mentorship, and remain committed to excellence. Trust in God’s guidance and let your passion drive you toward a purposeful future.
Welcome to the journey of empowered living!
